Acetylene Sensor Warns of Power Transformer Failure
Added Mar 5, 2013 | Rate View top rated
In systems such as power transformers, oil-filled high-voltage cables, and network protection transformers, Acetylene gas is only produced by high-energy discharges or high temperature, which often signals a failure in progress. University of Toledo Professor Dr. Abdul-Majeed Azad has developed a sensor for the company Acense LLC that can alert utility companies when their transformers need maintenance. This technology can potentially save utilities millions in replacement costs, and help energy consumers avoid blackouts by preventing transformer explosions.
