Supersonic Parachute Testing
NASA seeks to use atmospheric drag as a solution for planetary atmospheric deceleration, deploying next-generation drag devices at high supersonic speeds to safely land crews, cargo, and vehicles. NASA's Low Density Supersonic Decelerators project, led by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is conducting full-scale, stratospheric tests of these breakthrough technologies high above Earth to prove their value for future missions to Mars. The most recent supersonic flight tests were conducted off the coast of Hawaii in 2014 and 2015, and could influence technologies used in Mars missions launching as early as 2020.
