Mobile, Solar-Powered Water Filtration System
SOS is a mobile unit that can purify contaminated water in the aftermath of a flood and was developed by researchers at the National Nanotechnology Center of Thailand. SOS, which stands for Solar Operating System, was developed for water for drinking during the 2011 floods in Thailand, when flood waters swamped more than two-thirds of the country. The researchers used silver nanoparticles to coat the pours of the ceramic filter to minimize the amount of bacteria that comes into contact with the filter itself. They have collaborated with the Thai Red Cross Society to do successful field testing of the prototype.
